I have been searching for free Photoshop plugins, and using them in Serif PhotoPlus 9,
It's surprising what they can do!
Here is an original image of a lizard, converted from RAW, but otherwise as taken.

First job is to get rid of the unwanted background elements by cloning and Gaussian Blur, and a slight crop to improve composition
Then the plug in "Selective Saturation" was used to select the background and increase saturation
Then the plugin "High pass Sharpen" was applied and adjusted to taste.
The final touch was to use the "Noiseware Community Edition " to eliminate noise and here is the result
It certainly made a big difference!
